I first began supporting City in 2006. I started following European football via television and the internet, and found that it was easiest to find in depth information on the English leagues.
I wanted to pick a team to support and scoured the English newspapers for a team that valued their supporters in a way that I felt appropriate. I found an article on the BBC that spoke about how City reached out to the community to grow their fan base. Once I finished the article I knew that I could only support Manchester City.
I followed the Blues the best I could from America, but I needed more. I arranged a trip to Manchester and on December 1, 2013 experienced the thrill of being at a City match for the very first time. The excitement, friendliness and camaraderie with other Blues supporters made the journey to the Etihad an amazing experience for us.After returning to Chicago something was missing, as we watched and cheered for the Blues from the sofa….the camaraderie. I started to search the internet to see if their were other City supporters in Chicago.
I stumbled upon the Chicago MCFC Supporters Group website and decided to go to the bar they met at for the next match. Arriving apprehensively and excited at the same time, we sat alone and were soon greeted by Victoria, the current head of the Chicago MCFC Supporters Group. She introduced us to other members and our weekend mornings have never been the same.
Non-football friends think we are crazy to get up for a 6:45am match, but those have been some our favorites. Also you cannot beat spending the morning with friends talking football and the Blues, and then looking at your watch only to realize it is5:00pm and you’ve spent the entire afternoon at The Globe. For me, that is what being a Manchester City supporter is all about….friends, family, camaraderie.
